Kellogs Cereal

Are you looking for some great Kellogg’s cereal (often misspelled Kellogs cereal)? I love the traditional corn flakes, but the Special K has also become a very popular cereal. (See also the Healthiest Cereal). I think the best part about eating Kellogg’s cereals is reading the back of the box and learning all of the intriguing history that unfolds before your eyes. I love to hear the stories of innovation and creative thinking that take place in the human heart and mind, especially when it is followed by decisive action. It was the action taken that actually made the cereal famous—the system or method of marketing and distributing this product to the entire nation, and now internationally.

In the history of making corn flakes, it was actually a type of wheat porridge that led to the corn flake. When the business man, W. K. Kellogg, and his brother (who was a physician), were distracted from their cooking duties, they left a type of wheat that they were going to use to make granola. By the time they returned, the wheat was stale, but they tried running it through the rollers anyway and found that grain actually came out in Kellogs cereal flakes, instead of one long sheet of dough. It was eventually the use of corn in this same type of processing that led to what we know as corn flakes today. I’m glad they kept experimenting! What if they had thought nothing of the stale wheat and just decided to pitch it? What if they decided that the wheat taste was good enough and never went on to see what the corn flake might be like?

As a consumer, this history gives us a great sense of the importance of perseverance. Yet, the great secret is actually in how these Kelloggs brothers then marketed this type of cereal. How did they get people interested in a product that was totally new? How did they convince people that corn flakes, or any flake for that matter, should be part of our regular breakfast diet? How long did it take them? How many different campaigns did they attempt in order to get the results they have today? I’m not sure as to the answer to these questions, but one principle is obvious in the distribution of the corn flake: Never give up! So, when you come across a new, but possibly bizarre idea like the Kellogs cereal, make sure that you have a plan that will help you be successful in making your new idea become a reality.
